Mower Deck Belt Routing: What to Photograph Before Replacement
Before removing a mower deck belt, photograph the pulley path, idler spring, belt keepers, and blade pulley orientation.
Published · Last updated:

Many mower belt replacement problems are not caused by the belt. They come from routing the new belt on the wrong side of an idler, outside a keeper, or around the wrong pulley groove. Photographing the deck before removal prevents most of those mistakes.

Photo checklist
Before taking the belt off, capture:
| Photo | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Full deck top | Shows complete belt path |
| Idler pulley close-up | Shows spring and tension direction |
| Belt keepers | Shows which side the belt runs on |
| Blade pulleys | Confirms groove and wrap direction |
| PTO or drive pulley | Shows where belt enters the deck |
Take photos from two angles. Grass clippings and shadows can hide the belt path.
Common routing mistakes
- Belt routed outside a keeper.
- Flat side of belt against a V-groove pulley.
- V side against a flat idler.
- Spring reinstalled in the wrong hole.
- Belt twisted between pulleys.
After installation, rotate the blade pulleys by hand with the engine off and key removed. The belt should stay centered and move smoothly.
When routing was not the only issue
If the belt still jumps off, inspect bent keepers, worn pulleys, weak idler springs, and seized spindle bearings. A new belt cannot fix a pulley that wobbles.

FAQ
Should the belt be tight before engaging blades?
It should sit properly in the pulleys, but final tension usually comes from the idler system when engaged.
Why does the belt smoke?
The belt may be routed wrong, stuck against a keeper, too tight, or running on a seized pulley.
